The Fountain of Living Waters

(August 17, 2017)

What exactly was Yeshua doing when He took His finger and wrote in the ground or the earth during the time when the Pharisees brought Him forth the woman caught in adultery? There are some pretty powerful passages that may give some insight into what He was doing, and what He was also proclaiming.

To begin, I would like to first bring you to a passage from Jeremiah 2:13:

Jer 2:13“For My people have done two evils: THEY HAVE FORSAKEN ME, THE FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATERS, to hew out for themselves cisterns, cracked cisterns, which do not hold water.(ISR 98)

Now, on over to Jeremiah 17:13:

Jer 17:13 O יהוה, the expectation of Yisra’ĕl(Israel), all who forsake You are put to shame. “THOSE WHO DEPART FROM ME SHALL BE WRITTEN IN THE EARTH, because THEY HAVE FORSAKEN יהוה(YHWH), THE FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATERS.”(ISR 98)

Did you catch that? “Those who depart from Me shall be written in the earth…they have forsaken YHWH, the Fountain of Living Waters”.  So, having that fresh in your mind, let’s go to the passage pertaining to Yeshua bending down and writing in the ground:

John 8:6And this they said, trying Him, so that they might accuse Him. But יהושע, BENDING DOWN, WROTE ON THE GROUND(EARTH) WITH THE FINGER, as though He did not hear.
7But as they kept on questioning Him, He straightened up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
8AND BENDING DOWN AGAIN, HE WROTE ON THE GROUND(EARTH).
9And when they heard it, being reproved by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the older ones until the last. And יהושע was left alone, and the woman standing in the middle.(ISR 98)

Pretty interesting correlation there don’t you think? I know I certainty thought so when I came across those passages, and knowing who Yeshua was also demonstrating this to.

The Pharisees and the scribes that approached Yeshua were from the House of Judah; which if you know the history of the House of Judah and the House of Israel, both played harlots against YHWH, being in adultery against Him.  Eventually the House of Israel was divorced (Jer 3:8) being cast out of covenant and land.  The House of Judah,  was also cast out of the land, but not out of covenant, as the Messiah was to come from Judah. So, eventually the House of Judah was brought back to the land, until their final judgement in 70AD.

If you read the beginning of Jeremiah Chapter 17, in the verses that precede the verse mentioned above, you will read of the idolatry of Judah, of how they left the House of YHWH to offer up sacrifices to Baal and Asherah.  You can see a correlating verse in 2 Chronicles 24:18:

2 Chron 24:18 THEY ABANDONED THE HOUSE OF THE LORD(YHWH), the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and idols. So wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs.(BSB)

The House of Judah, as a whole,  while presenting this woman to Yeshua, were themselves in adultery with YHWH, and had already forsaken Him.  It was eventually the House of Judah that crucified Yeshua, as they were not interested in a spiritual kingdom, and sought to kill Him, and take what did not belong to them:

Matthew 21:38But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. 39And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.(KJV)

Yeshua, being YHWH/God come in the flesh, and the Fountain of Living Waters, writing  in the ground shows that the House of Judah had departed from Him, as they continuously sought to kill Him,  and eventually crucified Him. Thus, the House of Judah became a widow upon the death of Messiah, and were fully cast out of covenant; as the Old marriage covenant became void upon the death of Messiah. The House of Judah was eventually laid waste in 70 AD, and no longer remains. Indeed they became cracked cisterns(vessels) unable to hold the Living Water.

Just as a cracked cistern can hold no water, likewise an old wineskin can not hold New wine.

During the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, Yeshua boldly declared for those who thirst to come to Him and drink:

John 7:37Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “IF ANYONE IS THIRSTY, LET HIM COME TO ME AND DRINK. 38″He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will FLOW RIVERS OF LIVING WATER.'”39But THIS HE SPOKE OF THE SPIRIT, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. (KJV)

As out of Him was to flow rivers of living water, flowing freely from Jerusalem, filling the earthen jars that would hold the Spirit, and the New wine, into New wineskins:

♦Zechariah 14:8 AND IN THAT DAY IT SHALL BE THAT LIVING WATERS FLOW FROM YERUSHALAYIM, half of them toward the eastern sea and half of them toward the western sea, in summer as well as in winter.(ISR 98)

♦Isaiah 44:3For I WILL POUR WATER ON THE THIRSTY LAND, and currents on the dry ground; I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT ON YOUR DESCENDANTS, and My blessing on your offspring.(BSB)

When Yeshua was pierced with a spear,  and out of His body flowed both water and blood, it signified not only what He had stated, but then the coming fulfillment of the Spirit poured out at the Feast of Pentecost.

John 19:33but when they came to יהושע (Yeshua/Jesus) and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and instantly BLOOD and WATER came out. (ISR 98)

♦Acts 2:16But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;17And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:(KJV)

Also, during the time that Yeshua was pierced, the outflow from His side, mirrored that of the temple drains that entered into the Kidron Valley.  Yeshua/Jesus was crucified during Passover, and it is estimated that roughly a quarter-million lambs were slain in a typical Passover season. Gallons upon gallons of blood would have been mixed with water that poured into the Kidron Brook.  In fact, Kidron means “black brook” or “gloomy brook”, perhaps named so because of its blood-stained river bed and banks.

So,  given this imagery, that as the blood of the many sacrificed lambs being slain flowed out the temple drains into the Kidron Valley, blood and water also flowed out from the Lamb of God who was slain. Wow!

What powerful imagery! Out of the physical temple, flowed blood and water of slain lambs, and out of the true living temple, the Body of Messiah,  came forth His Living Water(Spirit) and His blood(atonement for sin)!

In my blog post “The Living Temple“, I go over how Yeshua was always the fulfillment of the temple,  and when Yeshua stated that in 3 days He would rebuild the temple, he would do so with living stones, not dead ones.

♦John 2:19Jesus answered and said unto them, DESTROY THIS TEMPLE, AND IN THREE DAYS I WILL RAISE IT UP.  20Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?21BUT HE SPAKE OF THE TEMPLE OF HIS BODY. 22When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.(KJV)

♦Mark 14:58“We heard Him saying, ‘I shall destroy this Dwelling Place that is made with hands, and within three days I SHALL BUILD ANOTHER MADE WITHOUT HANDS.’ ”(ISR 98)

Yeshua came to rebuild the House of David, which is mentioned by James in Acts 15:14-18. James mentions that when Peter (Simon) went to the gentiles (Acts 10), that it was in agreement with prophesy as he quotes from Amos 9:11-12 and Jeremiah 12:1.

Acts 15:14Simon has told us how God first visited the Gentiles to take from them a people to be His own. 15The words of the prophets agree with this, as it is written: 16AFTER THIS I WILL RETURN AND REBUILD THE FALLEN TENT OF DAVID. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it, 17so that the remnant of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who bear My name, says the Lord who does these things 18that have been known for ages.’ 19It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not cause trouble for the Gentiles who are turning to God.(BSB)

What you will find pertaining to the House of David,  is that, mentioned in the book of Zechariah, chapters 12-14, YHWH shall pour out on the House of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, a spirit of grace, and a fountain shall be opened for sin and uncleanliness.

Zec 12: 10“And I(YHWH) shall POUR (LIVING WATER) on the house of Dawiḏ(David) and on the inhabitants of Yerushalayim a spirit of favour and prayers. AND THEY SHALL LOOK ON ME WHOM THEY PIERCED, and they shall mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son. And they shall be in bitterness over Him as a bitterness over the FIRST-BORN.

This passage is also highly significant as not only is it mentioned in John 19:37, but shows that it was YHWH Himself that they would look upon.

John 19:33But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: 34But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. 35And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. 36For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. 37And again another scripture saith, THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED.

What do you also notice about the above passage? Did you figure it out? It was the continuation of an earlier passage, pertaining to blood and water coming forth out of the side of Yeshua during Passover. Then, the Spirit poured out at Pentecost.

Zec 13:1 IN THAT DAY THERE SHALL BE A FOUNTAIN OPENED TO THE HOUSE OF DAVID AND TO THE INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM FOR SIN AND FOR UNCLEANNESS.

Truly, “IN THAT DAY” a Fountain of LIVING WATERS poured forth, cleansing all sin and unrighteousness, and filled many cisterns that were able to hold living water, that sprung forth everlasting life.

John 4:10Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have GIVEN THEE LIVING WATER.  11The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? 13Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14BUT WHOSOEVER DRINKETH OF THE WATER THAT I SHALL GIVE HIM SHALL NEVER THIRST; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a WELL OF WATER SPRINGING UP INTO EVERLASTING LIFE. (KJV)
