Why call “Me Master, Master”?

October 21, 2017

I thought it to be quite interesting when I came across this passage in my reading last night and this morning:

Luke 6:46“But why do you call Me ‘Master, Master,’ and do not do what I say?

Reading this passage brought me then to a passage in Malachi:

Mal1:6“A son esteems his father, and a servant his master. AND IF I AM THE FATHER, WHERE IS MY ESTEEM? AND IF I AM MASTER WHERE IS MY FEAR(HONOR/REVERANCE) said יהוה(YHWH) of hosts TO YOU PRIESTS WHO DESPISE MY NAME. But you asked, ‘In what way have we despised Your Name?’

7“YOU ARE PRESENTING DEFILED FOOD ON MY ALTAR. But you asked, ‘In what way have we defiled You?’ Because you say, ‘The table of יהוה is despicable.’

A few main things I want to focus on here, as I believe that what Yeshua spoke above from Luke 6, is in direct correlation with the passage in Malachi, and I am going to do a little break down here, so if you would like to hang on with me, while I do so:

1.) Yeshua in the above passage is speaking to those who were following Him, and He asked why do you call me “Master, Master” (or if you would like to understand more on that, study out the Greek underlying word kurios, “Lord, Lord”) but yet do not obey?

This makes me think on something I wrote a while back concerning the Third Commandment:

The Third commandment: Ex 20:7Thou shalt not take the name of YHWH thy God in vain; for YHWH will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.

The word ‘in vain’ means to bare false witness, to lie, or to be morally guile: strongs Hebrew 7723.

To be morally guile. To be morally putrid yet professing His Name, YHWH Yeshua, is taking His Name in vain.

So, to call Him Master, but yet not do what He says, is to bring His Name to naught, to dishonor and to despise Him. In essence you are a liar, and taking His Name in vain.

Which is exactly what is being stated by YHWH in Malachi 1:6, If I am your MASTER where is your FEAR? Where is your Honor and respect?

2.) Also notice the correlation to Yeshua stating why do you call me Master, and YHWH stating the same, but also saying “If I AM THE FATHER”. This is showing that by also calling Yeshua Master, is to call Him Father…as He is indeed the physical form of the Father. Yeshua is YHWH.

3.) Notice that in Mal 1:6 it says “TO YOU PRIESTS” who despise MY NAME. Well, again in ref to Luke 6, Yeshua is talking to those who are following Him, and according to His Word, under the New Covenant, we are all priests, and priests offer up sacrifices; now if you are in covenant, you are either an obedient priest or a disobedient priest:

1 Peter 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being built up, a spiritual house, a set-apart priesthood, to offer up spiritual slaughter offerings acceptable to Elohim through יהושע Messiah…..9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a set-apart nation, a people for a possession, that you should proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light,

So, what happens to the priests that disobey, bring His Name in vain and offer up defiled sacrifices?

Well, you can continue on reading in Malachi ch 2 if you’d like, however, I can tell you it is not good. Also, as Paul also states in 1 Cor 10:20-21, it is also not good to offer up sacrifices as the gentiles do, as they offer up to demons, and you cannot be the sharer in the table of the Master, and the table of demons.

3.) In the passage in Malachi, these people were blind, they thought that they were bringing honor to Him, and offering up acceptable sacrifices, but they were not, they were an abomination, and they were teaching others the same.

So, what is also interesting is that this is just a few verses prior to the passage of Luke 6:49, you have this in verse: 39And He spoke a parable to them, “Is a blind able to lead a blind? Shall they not both fall into a pit?

~~~~~~~~
In conclusion I offer my paraphrase of the above passage from Luke 6:46
Why do you offer me defiled food and dishonor my Name by disobeying me, yet call Me ‘Master, Master”?
As I feel very strongly that for a great many this is indeed what He is saying. May we all stay humble before the feet of the great “I AM” and not let our lives speak against Him. Shalom.
